MIND GAMES

I wonder if mind games work, but you know and I know that at times those are the only games we have left to work with. so, here's how I see it:

1)
a non-pre-judgment of experience is best, no prior conditioning of how I expect to feel, or even how I do fee. An acceptance that all is as it is. No need to classify, analyze or spiritualize anything! then, we can stretch and go straight to GO.

2) In truth, mind games do work. Think of Victor Frankl's internal transcendence of life in a Nazi concentration camp and his identification of the final, irreducible human freedom, the freedom to choose one's own way of aligning one's self to any given reality. I guess that's what Roberto Benigni had in mind with his absurdist film Life Is Beautiful, but I still hate the movie because it trivializes something too holy and too horrible to make light fun of.

3) Being confined can result in a kind of liberation. On 4 nights a week I am pretty strictly confined for 8 hours to isolation in the gatehouse of a fairly deserted condo. This is my job. If I go into it with no attitude or opinion at all, I'm far better off to begin with. Having arrived and relieved the afternoon-to-evening guard, I turn everything superfluous off -- radio, AC -- then I throw open the window/doors and settle everything, myself too, down for the evening. Now it's up to me whether to make this into a prison or a prism (a refracted opportunity for creative envisionment).

4) I think that every task we accept is a kind of confinement. It helps me to sometime use a timer, as I am doing now with this writing trip. It provides a pre-determined bubble of time in which I am free to attend to what I have chosen to do. Also, it gives a cut-off point, so that one does not simply ramble on or around a task.

What MUST be done just might be done willingly or even delightfully, rather than grudgingly or hopelessly; because the spirit in which a thing is done is, after all, a choice we are free to make. It's a chance to begin all over again!

--Bill Joyner (2-28-99)

"We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love. ...He who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer."
--(I John 3:14)

... Objective and holistic perception of another human being becomes possible only when nothing is needed from him...
Un-needing love ... makes no trouble and is practically always pleasure -- is giving ... can never be sated ... beyond the shadow of a doubt ... eager to help the other toward self-actualization ... (productive) of the truest, most penetrating perception of the other ... creates the partner, giving him or her a self-image, a feeling of love-worthiness, all of which permits growth.
--Abraham H. Maslow in Toward a Psychology of Being

Just lately I heard from Jeanette, my favorite one-time managerette/boss, when I was dishing over at The Mel-O-Dee on U.S. 41 in north Sarasota. she taught me to stack and spray down the dishes so they'd be ready to go into the dish washing machine. "Otherwise," she used to smile and say, "you'd be in the weeds back here forever!"

Preaching is moral violence.
Existence is love.
The alternate to self-love...is self-destruction.

The man who wither hopes for heaven or fears hell cannot be free. Shame on us if we continue to become intoxicated in the taverns of hope or the cellars of fear. How many years had I lived without comprehending this!

--Nikos Kanzantzakis in Report to Greco

I don't try to guess what a million people will like. It's hard enough to know what I like

--John Huston

"...Last night the moon came
dropping its clothes in
the street.
I took it as a sign
to start singing, falling
up into the bowl of
sky..."
poem from Runi
(13th Century Sufi poet)

Sects with mass followings fill a void as a society changes.

Mr. Li, who asserts that he has a higher spiritual authority than Jesus, Mohammed or Buddha, teaches that he was sent to earth by a "supreme being" to save mankind from moral corruption caused by consumerism, modern science and technology.

Chinese society has disintegrated so far, Mr. Li contends, that many humans are reincarnated as demons, some of them disguised as monks, "Especially in Taiwan." he has written, "many famous monks or lay Buddhists are actually demons."

Competing for followers with other cults, Mr. Li has denounced other qigong masters as "possessed with foxes or yellow weasels, and some with snakes."

At today's protest, followers extolled the virtues of their cult, talking more about the beneficial effects of moral discipline than about the greatness of their leader. "I am a better father and husband and citizen," said a 48-year-old man who came from Hebei Province, and who said he had been a member of Buddhist Law for six years. "We are making a better society. I don't get sick anymore," the man continued, "If everyone is healthy, it will save medical costs and be good for society as a whole."

Today's protest, populated mostly by people from outside the capital, elicited much fascination but limited sympathy from Beijing residents, thousands of whom gathered to look on.

Many of the cult followers carried a book by Mr. Li. Buddhist Law, founded by Mr. Li in 1992, preaches that evil lurks in the modern appearance of rock and roll music, television, drugs and homosexuality. Although the group is vehemently opposed to modern science and technology, many members use the internet.

"They're crazy," said Li Xiaoming, 27, who works for a transport company. "But there are a lot of them, so the government has to listen."

from the New York Times

O living god of this forest-carpeted world, flung forth
by distant infernos of your great love, let my soul sing
with the new leaves of Spring; let me arise from the
epicenter of your presence and joyfully ascend.
--WJ/1978

To really see what we ordinarily look at from time to time makes fireworks happen inside us that can't always be contained when the brightness of a person or a thing is discovered or uncovered. This may take time and a habit of perceiving which may, at the beginning, be very tedious, but the rewards are great and they come as surprises often; and daily becomes special and needs no equipment but to be seen extraordinarily well.

--Corita Kent

"The more they reduce the physical space in which I am confined, the more my soul's horizons are expanded."

--Armando Valadares, a prisoner in Cuba for 8 years

Grow where you are grounded!
Now is the only time,
here is the only place
--as far as we know.

In any case,
you can only be
where you are
right now.

--BJ

Love turns reality inside out, two separate beings become an inseparable unity.

--BJ

Love is not all; it is not meat or drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love cannot fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, not set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.

--Edna St. Vincent Millay

To relate is to create.

LEARN HOW BEAUTIFUL A LITTLE SELF-CONFIDENCE CAN MAKE YOU

Faith in yourself will make despair disappear.

--Frank Tyger

We are all afraid -- for our confidence, for the future, for the world. That is the nature of the human imagination.

--Jacob Bronowski

Optimal self-defense is victory for all concerned. (It is) an effort to help all parties triumph over terror.

--Israel Charney (in How Can We Commit the Unthinkable?, p.180)

Don't be discouraged by a failure. It can be a positive experience. Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, inasmuch as every discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true, and every fresh experience points out some form of error which we shall afterwards carefully avoid.

--John Keats

TeChing

While you
Cultivate the soul and embrace unity,
can you keep them from separating?
Focus your vital breath until it is supremely soft.
can you be like a baby?
Cleanse the mirror of mysteries,
can you make it free of blemish?
Love the people and enliven the state,
can you do so without cunning?
Open and close the gate of heaven,
can you play the part of the female?
Reach out with clarity in all directions,
can you refrain from action?
It gives birth to them and nurtures them,
It gives birth to them but does not possess them,
It rears them but does not control them.
This is called "mysterious integrity."
