I happened
upon and purchased the Cream album Wheels of Fire, mostly on a whim when
its silvery design caught my eye in a Philadelphia record shop as I was
ambling about downtown on a lunch break in l967. Wheels of Fire was the
first rock album I ever owned, and I chose it largely because it was so
strikingly similar to the title of my then freshly-released book, Wheels in
the Air. I had no idea who Cream was or what kind of music they played.
Even in the mid-sixties, I was indifferent to The Beatles, unimpressed by
Elvis, oblivious to Dylan. I was hired in 1968 to serve on the staff of the
Wilton Congregational Church in Connecticut, and some new youthful friends
quickly attuned me to contemporary musical tastes. Russel Guest brought his
copy of Bob Dylans John Wesley Harding album by the church where I worked
as a youth minister and played for me the song I Dreamed I Saw St.
Augustine That was enough to make a believer out of me! Others came in with
such unimagined wonders as Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and MC5. As for my
Wheels of Fire album by Cream, it was an instant, perennial hit! Bill

The movie KEY LARGO presents a macrocosm of personal responses to evil. The coiled menace of Edward G. Robinsons character is palpable as he and his mob take over a motel in the Florida Keys during a hurricane. Everyone at the motel is held hostage and threatened with death. Various responses are made to this predicament. Lionel Barrymore, as the motel owner, forcefully mouths off at the hoodlums from his wheelchair, willing to take a load of lead, if need be, for the sake of telling these guys the truth about themselves. His daughter, played by Lauren Bacall, stays low-key, moving about cat-like, cautiously. And Humphrey Bogart, recently home from the war and a guest at the motel, plays his cards sparingly, noncommittally, but holds his ground, angling for a chance to turn the tables. As in all such great epics of conscience, the viewer is challenged to consider what he or she might do in similar circumstances. BJ

I was first fascinated by music by listening to a Victrola we had in our house around 1940. It had a giant needle, 78 RPM records and a hand crank, which, when wound up, produced the warbling sound of tunes like Red Sails in the Sunset. BJ Be grateful for luck. Pay the thunder no mind listen to the birds, and dont hate nobody. Eubie Blake I had always wanted to see Joan Jett and The Blackhearts in concert. When they appeared at Janus Landing, a small, outside venue in downtown St. Petersburg, a good friend accompanied me there to make sure this dream would come true. We glimpsed with anticipation the band taking their places on the darkened stage. Then, with an intense flurry of guitars and drums, there she was, her short henna-colored hair and her afterburners all aglow -- Joan Jett, belting out her signature anthem of self-liberating contempt for what anybody might think about her, I Dont Give a Damn About My Bad Reputation. The hurricane force of the music didnt let up the whole evening, as she darted about, sweating and pouring every ounce of her energy into the show -- my all-time favorite rock and roll queen! BJ |

The future just keeps showing up ahead of time. Unexpected waves of fortune and misfortune sweep over and around us. One moment were basking in the warm glow of satisfaction and success, only to be assailed at the next by overwhelming waves of trouble and doubt, nervously improvising variations upon our once perfect scene. BJ
