My longtime friend Ron Stefanik had settled a large blue tarp over trellis supports in his garden, and we gathered beneath it on July the 4th, 1988, sharing the easy vibes of that golden afternoon. I had stopped by to see him on the way to Detroit, where I was delivering a car. At last in Cleveland, no less a real down-home tented circus! The party in this open tent was very simple and serene, just Ron and I sharing funny stories of when we both worked (on different shifts) as caregivers to an aging business tycoon in Palm Beach, our duties consisting largely of emptying ash trays and keeping the scotch glass filled. There was an English butler/cook, husband/wife team living at the residence. And finally, they got us both canned because of something like late night party noise. Rons laughter is one of his most priceless gifts, and on the occasion of our 4th of July reunion beneath the makeshift-tarp tent in his yard, Rons ebullient ability to laugh about it all, combined with his honest sagacity and the sweet ambiance of his Monastery Gardens motif was quite enough to provide a joyous circus afternoon! Bill Joyner

Up until last night, I had morning glories, marigolds, etc. Frost is very harsh. I am glad to have you write about your doubts, rather than just comfortable thoughts as I am living in the uncertain realms of life. Most of our basic problems began with conception. We are missing the happy all is well chip, and more. Also, it is almost impossible to disclaim our education God will take care of it, etc. Be as calm and as strong as possible. letters of Ron Stefanik (November 2003)
The best friendships and the best families endure by accumulating a history solid enough to suggest a future. Jane Howard
F R I E N D S H I P Someone needs a helping hand, a demonstration of stability and support. And yes, the very act of being calm and in control makes everything better right away. Stand sure, therefore, and be that smiling, relaxed person with whom you and others are most comfortable even if it has to be just an act. BJ

A reported dialog between Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Charles Kingsley: What is the secret of your life? Tell me, that I may make my life beautiful, too, she says. And he simply replied, I had a friend.

Arriving again where you began and knowing that place for the first time, as T.S. Eliot said is it eternal recurrence, love reinventing itself forever anew? Or, is it just the peaceful stillness of being at home with who and where you are? BJ |
